New Beginnings: Back to College for Something Different

Hi.  Patrick Dodds here. This is a new blog I'm starting as a new student on the one year, part-time "Advanced Practice: Photography" course run by Richmond and Hillcroft Adult Community College (RHACC), Richmond, Surrey. Ria Stochel is our enthusiastic, knowledgeable and entertaining lecturer. I'm late starting the course and have come to it in the 3rd week, having missed the introductory session and the "Visual Language in a Nutshell" day as I only recently got to hear it was on.

This week the theme / title of our session was "Linear Narratives and Photo Essays" and our homework for the week is to create a five-shot photographic narrative with an "establishing" or opening photograph, a "hook" shot (rough translation: a photograph that sparks interest, asks questions, keeps the viewer engaged and wanting answers), and "in-between" shots. Whilst the pictures are to be printed out so that we can experiment with their running order on a table in the class, they will also be posted on here in due course. I may also add any photographs on here that I consider interesting and that I would not have taken had I not been engaged in trying to complete the exercise, just as a record of my time on the course.
